The Myers' Cocktail was developed by Baltimore physician John Myers, MD, who used intravenous micronutrient therapy to treat a wide range of chronic conditions throughout the 1970s and 1980s. After his death, his formula was refined and documented by Alan Gaby, MD, whose landmark 2002 review in Alternative Medicine Review remains the foundational clinical reference for this therapy.
What Is In the Myers' Cocktail?
The modified Myers' Cocktail consists of a carefully balanced combination of magnesium, calcium, B vitamins (including B5, B6, and B12), and vitamin C — all delivered directly into the bloodstream via intravenous infusion. Each ingredient serves a specific physiological purpose: magnesium supports muscle relaxation and energy production; B vitamins are essential cofactors in cellular metabolism; and vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that supports immune function and collagen synthesis.
What the Clinical Literature Shows
Gaby's 2002 review, published in Alternative Medicine Review, documented the clinical use of the Myers' Cocktail across a broad range of conditions. The review found the formula to be effective against "acute asthma attacks, migraines, fatigue (including chronic fatigue syndrome), fibromyalgia, acute muscle spasm, upper respiratory tract infections, chronic sinusitis, seasonal allergic rhinitis, and cardiovascular disease."[1]
A 2009 placebo-controlled pilot study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine specifically examined Myers' Cocktail therapy in fibromyalgia patients. The intravenous micronutrient therapy group experienced "significantly improved tender points, pain, depression, and quality of life directly following treatment," with effects persisting for four weeks post-intervention.[2]
A 2023 literature review in Nutrients further supported the role of the key vitamins in the formula — particularly vitamins C, D, and B — in reducing fatigue symptoms in both healthy individuals and those with chronic illness, noting benefits "both when taken orally and parenterally."[3]
The Bioavailability Advantage
A key reason the Myers' Cocktail is delivered intravenously rather than orally is bioavailability. A 2025 review in Cureus explained that IV vitamin therapy "offers enhanced bioavailability, higher therapeutic dosages, and targeted nutrient replenishment, making it particularly effective for individuals with malabsorption issues and chronic illnesses."[4] When nutrients are taken orally, they must pass through the digestive system, where absorption is limited and variable. IV delivery bypasses this entirely, placing nutrients directly into the bloodstream at concentrations that oral supplementation cannot achieve.
At Nectar Wellness
Our Myers' Cocktail infusion is formulated to the clinical standard and administered by our licensed registered nurses. Sessions run approximately 45–60 minutes and are a popular choice for clients seeking an energy reset, immune support, or recovery from illness or physical exertion. It is also frequently chosen as a first IV therapy experience for clients new to nutrient infusion.
